Congrats! You’ve finally started your Invisalign journey. Many people like the benefits that come with invisible braces. Designed and produced with advanced 3D printing technology, these aligners can make your orthodontic experience much more comfortable.

But what exactly should you expect once you wear Invisalign aligners? The process involves wearing a series of aligners, each one for around one week or two. Instead of having metal brackets and wires like traditional braces, Invisalign treatment utilises tooth-coloured composite buttons that are small and unobtrusive, positioned strategically on a few teeth to work with the clear aligners producing the desired tooth movements. Depending on individual cases, a whole course of treatment may take anywhere from 12 to 24 months, followed by wearing retainers eventually at night time only.

Here are some key benefits with Invisalign orthodontic treatment, together with some tips and tricks which may help making the process even smoother.

They are removable.

With traditional braces it can be quite tricky to brush adequately and almost impossible to floss due to the fixed brackets and wires. Where food and plaque accumulates there is increased risk of developing dental decays or gingivitis.

One clear advantage of Invisalign is that the aligners are easily removable! You can use your bare hands or a tool like Orthokey to dislodge the aligners. That way, there’ll be no worries taking them off when you need to eat or brush. Just make sure your Invisalign aligners are clean too before popping them back in!

Tip: Prepare a mini tooth care kit containing toothbrush, travel-sized toothpaste, and floss. Leave this kit in your handbag or briefcase together with the aligner case. They will come in handy when you are eating out.

They are comfortable to wear and almost invisible.

At first each new set of aligners can squeeze a little as they are doing their job to move teeth. After the initial days you soon get used to them and it’s easy to forget that they are in. Because the clear aligners are barely noticeable, they are a popular alternative to traditional braces, especially among adult patients.

Tip: Invisalign aligners have smooth edges and fit snuggly in place so there is less chance of rubbing against cheeks and lips. On rare occasions where rubbing occurs (for example when you first change to a new set of aligners), use an emery board to remove and polish a little bit off the edge that is causing the rubbing. This is simple to do at home and will not affect the fit of the aligners.

You may snack less and eat healthier – bonus!

This is because Invisalign has a recommended wear time of 20 to 22 hours, which leaves you with only a few more hours in a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as cleaning your teeth. Sticking to regular mealtime is the way to go while having the Invisalign treatment and it is the perfect opportunity to break that habit of snacking!

Tea, coffee, red wine, and other drinks with colour can stain aligners. If you want to keep them looking clear and ‘invisible’, it is best to drink water only, and make sure to take the aligners out for other drinks. I look at it as another chance to develop a healthy, good eating habit!

Tip: Brush the aligners twice a day gently with a soft toothbrush and rinse under cold or luke-warm water. Do not use toothpaste as it contains abrasive particles. Do not use hot water as it will distort the aligners. Once a week you can soak the aligners for about half an hour with denture-cleaning product to keep the aligners in tip-top condition.
