One of the first things you’ll notice when you meet someone is their teeth. Aside from their eyes, nose and other things, your set of pearly whites often are the biggest focal point on your face.
Not only does a good set of teeth make a great first impression, but maintaining them also improves your overall health. Here are three dental habits that you can incorporate into your daily routine.
Choosing the right brush
There are various types of toothbrushes available in the market today. A soft-bristled brush is best for removing plaque and debris from your teeth because they are more gentle on your gums. Small-headed brushes are preferable as these can better reach all areas of the mouth, including hard-to-reach back teeth. For many, an electric toothbrush is a good alternative to manual brushes as it is easy to use and does a very good job of cleaning teeth. It is important to replace your toothbrush regularly. Generally it is recommended to change to a new toothbrush every three months, or earlier if the bristles begin to show wear.
It’s a huge no-no to share toothbrushes (or any very personal items) even with family if you want to maintain good hygiene practices. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, the mouth is home to more than 700 species of bacteria. This would probably get you to think twice before sharing toothbrushes with someone else.
Use a tongue scraper
Much like its enamel-coated counterparts, our tongue also needs to be cleaned regularly. Tongues have as much bacteria as teeth which produce sulphur compounds that cause bad breath. You can easily avoid that by cleaning your tongue regularly with a tongue scraper. Toothbrushes today also have ridged tongue scrapers at the back of the brush head for convenience.
